East side around 1900

This one of my favorite photos. From the files of the Lamar Democrat. Taken around 1900 it shows the east side of the Square. It wasn't uncommon for vendors to travel and visit the towns their products were sold in. This was probably on a Saturday morning when everybody came to town to shop and then see the concert at the Bandstand when the sun went down. This looks like a salesman for White House Shoes pitching his wares. You can see him on the platform in front of the Pool's store. They were basically a General Store. You could get a little bit of everything there. All the way to the left is the Lamar House. It is where LBT is now. Next is Johannes big implement store. Then Pool's then W. A Elam's hardware store. Elam's is where the Rag Bag was and the Tae Kwon Do place is today. The Johannes and Pool buildings were later joined and painted white making one big Johannes store. It was later the C. B. Earps Hardware store and then later on Medlin-Frieden. It is now the parking lot south of LBT.
