St. Josephs College

This building was built around 1888 (same time as the court house). It started out as the Missouri Polytechnic Institute. When that didn't go over too well it was turned in to the Lamar College. After several years of success it started to decline. It was sold to the St. Benedictine Sisters of Atchison, KS. They renamed it St. Josephs College. But again, after several years of success the school fell on hard times. It was eventually tore down around 1927 and the brick was used in the construction of the Legion Hall (now Memorial Hall) on the SE corner of the Lamar Square. The College was located on, what was then south 7th street, although people called it College street because it ran straight in to the College. It is now 17th street and the only thing left is part of the brick stairs. George Digherio lives there now
